No. Dr. Anderson conducts psychological evaluations to make/confirm mental health and learning diagnoses. Based on the evaluation, she refers patients back to their pediatrician/primary care physician or to a psychiatrist for medication management.
A psychologist is a professional trained to assess and treat mental health conditions. This professional attended graduate school and obtained a PhD or PsyD. He/she completed internships and postdoctoral training experiences in order to obtain a license to practice as a psychologist. He/she can provide therapy and/or psychological testing services to patients. In contrast, a psychiatrist a medical professional who attended medical school and has chosen to specialize in psychiatry which is a field that focuses on treating mental health conditions. These professionals have obtained MDs or other equivalent credentials and can prescribe medication. They generally focus on medication management for complex presentations.
Please see the resources page for a handout which discusses preparing your child for testing. We will also discuss this in the first session (diagnostic interview) which is why it's important that your child attends. He/she will get to meet the psychologist/clinician and see the environment in which testing will take place. This typically helps the child begin to build rapport and feel more comfortable on the day of testing.
